Comparison
MacWhisper transcribes files. Voz types while you talk.
These two get compared constantly and they are not really competitors. Knowing which job you have saves you buying the wrong one.
The short answer
If you have an audio file and want a transcript, use MacWhisper. If you want to stop typing and have words appear at your cursor as you speak, use Voz.
MacWhisper is a superb file transcription tool — drop in a recorded meeting, lecture or interview and get a clean transcript with speakers and timestamps. Voz has no file mode at all. It is a voice keyboard.
Different jobs, side by side
| Voz Whisper | MacWhisper | |
|---|---|---|
| The job it does | Live dictation into any app | Transcribing audio and video files |
| Price | $2.99 once | $29–$59 once, depending on tier |
| Transcription | On device | On device |
| Types at your cursor | Yes | Not its purpose |
| Transcribes a recorded file | Yes | Yes, its whole point |
| Speaker labels | With optional AI | Yes |
| Timestamps and subtitle export | No | Yes |
Plenty of people own both, and that is a sensible outcome rather than a failure of one of them. If your week involves recorded calls and a lot of typing, $2.99 on top of MacWhisper covers the half it does not do.
Where MacWhisper genuinely wins
Everything that turns a recording into a finished document: batch transcription, timestamps, subtitle formats, and larger Whisper models for accuracy on difficult recordings. Voz will transcribe a file you drop on it, but it is a voice keyboard that happens to read files, not a transcription workstation. It is the app Reddit recommends for that job for good reason.
